Facebook launches new personal assistant like SIRI inside Messenger

Finally the social networking giant has entered the personal assistant market with its digital assistant known as M.

Instead of launching a standalone app, Facebook launched this personal assistant inside its messenger app.

In a Facebook post, Facebook Messenger head David Marcus introduced the new service called M:

Today we’re beginning to test a new service called M. M is a personal digital assistant inside of Messenger that completes tasks and finds information on your behalf. It’s powered by artificial intelligence that’s trained and supervised by people.

Tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Apple has already entered this segment with their products like Google Now, Cortana and Siri respectively. And now with M, Facebook wants to compete with existing players in the market.

How it works?

To try the new service, users will tap a small button at the bottom of the Messenger app to send a note to M, the same way they might message anyone on Facebook. M’s software will decode the natural language, ask follow up questions in the message thread, and send updates as the task is completed. This digital assistant from Facebook relies on the both Artificial Intelligence and human intelligence.

How is it different from others?

Unlike other AI-based services in the market, M can actually complete tasks on your behalf. It can purchase items, get gifts delivered to your loved ones, book restaurants, check appointments and flights and a lot more.

For now the roll out is limited to few users, for testing. We can soon expect this for the entire community.
